AAMFT Clinical Member LogoI am Charles Matthews. Welcome to my Home Page. You have probably found this website because you are looking for help with a problem that you have not been able to solve on your own or even with the help of your friends---not even by talking with your partner. In fact, you may not even have been able to identify the problem...but you know that you want to solve it.

This site is not just about me. The links will also lead you to information about the different kinds of counseling that are available and will make you a better-informed "consumer" of the services that my colleagues and I offer.

The work that I do is called psychotherapy, or "therapy" for short. I began work as a psychotherapist in 1992, specializing in treating chemical dependency, and began a private practice in Decatur, GA, in 1997. I am licensed in Georgia as both a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Professional Counselor (LPC) and am certified in Georgia as a Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CCADC). Please refer to the left margin of this page for additional details.

Sea GullI provide individual therapy, couples therapy and family therapy and work primarily with adults and teens. Whatever the mode of therapy, I believe that, above all, you must feel safe here---to express your feelings---appropriately---and to be honest without fear of being judged. You must also feel accepted here. This is my contract with all my clients. With this backdrop, it is my hope and experience that it will feel safe for you to disclose, to examine, and to begin to change---the beliefs and fears that drive our behavior and that, in turn, make us unhappy.

As your therapist, my role' is to listen, to encourage, to suggest, to educate, sometimes to gently confront, and sometimes to suggest---but never to judge or condemn.

In What Circumstances Can Counseling Help?
